Measuring Guide

Getting the correct measurements is key to ensuring your gates fit properly and install smoothly. Follow the steps below to measure your opening accurately before placing an order.

If you are unsure at any stage, it’s always best to double check your measurements or contact us with your dimensions and photos for guidance before ordering.

It is extremely important that you are certain that the gates that you order from us are the correct size for your gateway.  All of our gates are made to standard sizes (which helps us to keep our product costs down), so we are able to provide you with detailed sizing and specification drawings, so that you can carefully check that our gates are appropriately sized for you, before you place your order.  If there are any dimensions that you need and that are not shown on our drawings, please do message us and we will be pleased help.

Pre-measuring is incredibly important if you are fitting our gates to your existing gate posts, because this will leave you with very little 'wriggle room' and you will need to be certain that the gates are not only the right width, but that the hinge positions (and hinge type & size) will work with the hinge positions on your posts.

If you are installing new gate posts and new gates, then this allows you more flexibility. 

We must stress that if you order the wrong sized gates, it will be your responsibility to return the gates to us, in the same condition they were in when they left our warehouse.  So we cannot stress enough how important it is to order the right size for your requirements.

Step 1: Identify How Your Gates Will Be Installed

Before measuring, establish how your gates will be fitted. This will affect how you take your measurements and the size you need to order. Will they be:

  • Between existing walls or posts
  • Attached to the rear of posts or walls
  • Installed with new posts

Step 2: Measure the Opening Width

Measure the full width of the gap where the gates will sit:

  • Measure across the top, middle and bottom
  • Use the smallest measurement to allow for uneven surfaces
  • Always measure the opening itself - not any existing gates

The size you select should match the overall opening width. The gates will be made slightly smaller to allow for hinges and correct operation.

Step 3: Allow for Hinges and Clearances

Gates require space to open and close properly:

  • Allowance is needed for hinges on each side
  • A small gap is required between double gates
  • A flat vertical surface is needed for hinge fixing
Step 4: Consider Posts (If Required)

If you do not have existing walls or posts, you will need to allow for them:

  • Subtract the width of any new posts from your total opening
  • Order gates to suit the remaining clear gap

Example: If your opening is 10ft 6in and you are adding posts, the usable gap will be reduced - this reduced measurement is the size you should order.

Step 5: Measure the Gate Height

This measurement does not include any ground clearance. Gate height is measured from:

  • The bottom of the gate frame
  • To the highest point of the gate
Step 6: Allow for Ground Clearance

Make sure there is enough space between the bottom of the gate and the ground:

  • Typically around 50mm (2") or more
  • Allow extra clearance for sloping or uneven ground
Step 7: Check Ground Conditions and Swing Space

Before ordering, consider how the gates will operate:

  • Is the ground level or sloping?
  • Will the gates open inwards or outwards?
  • Are there any obstacles that could restrict movement?
